Functional Testing

Bloodwork

Bloodwork is an excellent tool for evaluating nutritional status, immune function, blood sugar regulation, metabolic health, liver function, kidney function, hormone levels, and more.

Common Blood Tests:

  • Complete blood count (CBC) - red blood cells, white blood cells, Hct, hemoglobin, & associated markers

  • Comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP) - fasting glucose, electrolytes, liver function, and kidney function

  • Vitamins, nutrients, & minerals - iron, panel, ferritin, vitamin D, vitamin B12, folate, zinc, magnesium, copper

  • TSH - thyroid function

  • Blood glucose markers - fasting insulin, HbA1c

  • Hormones - free testosterone, DHEA-S, estradiol, progesterone, SHBG

Cost: varies depending on labs ordered (cash labs typically range from $100-200 for a comprehensive panel)

  • WA patients - bloodwork can be ordered through Quest labs and billed to insurance OR via cash labs

  • Clients - bloodwork can be ordered via cash labs or requested from your local provider

Comprehensive Stool Analysis

The GI-MAP (GI Microbial Assay Plus) by Diagnostic Solutions is a DNA qPCR stool analysis. Addressing gut health is an integral component necessary for treating the root cause of skin conditions in the majority of cases. Addressing gut health includes promoting a healthy microbiome, reducing inflammation, treating pathogen infections and overgrowth, and treating leaky gut.

Cost: $330-389 (cash lab; price depends on location)

GI-Map includes the following analytes:

  • Bacterial Pathogens

  • Viral Pathogens

  • Parasitic Pathogens

  • Parasitic Protozoa

  • Parasitic Worms

  • Normal Bacterial Flora

  • Opportunistic Bacteria

  • H. pylori with Virulence Factors

  • H. pylori Resistance Genes

  • Fungi/Yeast

  • Digestion

  • Immune Response

  • Inflammation

Organic Acids Test (OAT)

Organic acids testing is a diagnostic tool used to measure the levels of various organic acids in the urine. These acids are byproducts of metabolism, and their concentrations can provide insights into metabolic processes, nutritional deficiencies, gut health, and the presence of infections or imbalances in the body. This type of testing is often used in functional medicine to assess issues like oxidative stress, yeast overgrowth, or mitochondrial dysfunction. The results can help guide treatment strategies, such as dietary changes, supplements, or lifestyle adjustments. We use both the organic acids tests from Mosaic Diagnostics and Diagnostic Solutions.

Price: cash lab; price depends on test and location

  • Diagnostic Solutions OAp - $185

  • Mosaic Diagnostics OAT - $270-330

  • Mosaic Diagnostics MOAT - $190

OAT Test Components:

  • Intestinal Microbial Overgrowth

  • Oxalate Metabolites

  • Glycolytic Cycle Metabolites and Mitochondrial Markers

  • Neurotransmitter Metabolites

  • Pyrimidine Metabolites & Ketone and Fatty Acid Oxidation

  • Nutritional Markers

  • Indicators of Detoxification

  • Amino Acid Metabolites

  • Mineral Metabolism

  • Glucose

  • Cortisol

Adrenal Hormone Testing (Salivary)

Salivary hormone testing is one of the best methods in evaluating adrenal hormones, such as cortisol and DHEA. Assessing adrenal hormone levels throughout the can provide insight into an individuals stress levels and stress response. Chronic stress can hinder the body’s ability to heal and repair tissues, so stress-management and adrenal support is a critical component of many treatment plans. At NDG, we typically order the Genova Adrenocortex Stress Profile.

Price: approx $135 (cash lab; exact price depends on location)

Adrenocortex Stress Profile Overview:

  • Four cortisol samples measured throughout the day give insight into the natural circadian diurnal cortisol rhythm, and help clinicians address specific daily stressors.

  • DHEA is measured once in the 7:00 AM – 9:00 AM sample.

  • Ratio of DHEA to cortisol is calculated to provide insight into anabolic/catabolic balance.

  • Optional Add-on:

    • Cortisol Awakening Response (CAR)

      • Two awakening samples to evaluate CAR.

      • CAR is a transient, immediate rise in cortisol upon awakening and is distinct from the diurnal rhythm. CAR reflects a person's ability to cope with anticipated challenges and their perception of control around chronic stress, providing insight into HPA axis resiliency.

Food & Environmental Allergy Testing

Allergy testing can be incredibly beneficial for clients with eczema, as eczema is part of the atopic triad (eczema, allergies, and asthma). There is an allergy/histamine component. Identifying and avoiding food and environmental allergies can be incredibly important in symptom-management and healing underlying causes. We typically recommend blood testing for allergies.
